UAE Area Guide, Part 7 of 8 - Sharjah
By John Hill
Sharjah is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (the UAE). Sharjah offers many activities and places of interest for visitors to experience, from world class shopping and dining to beautiful beaches and world class diving. The pristine marine environment, parks and beaches make this emirate ideal for eco tourism. Sharjah's east coast has long been considered to have the most beautiful scenery of the whole of the UAE, and has been a popular holiday destination for locals for many years.
Sharjah city like many of the cities of the UAE is undergoing rapid development, and has developed into a wondrous shopping and dining centre. Shopping in Sharjah varies from ultra modern shopping malls and boutiques where you can find all manner of designer goods and modern appliances and electrical goods through to traditional souqs where traditional arts and crafts can be purchased. One of the most famous souqs in Sharjah is the Sharjah Gold Centre; here you can purchase all sorts of gold and precious stone handmade jewellery, as well as watches and gold coins. Dining in Sharjah offers a wide variety of traditional Arabian or Western cuisine served at a wide array of hotels, restaurants and cafes. It is not difficult to find food to suit every taste and budget in Sharjah.
Beaches and the marine environment offer a great deal for visitors to the area, wether your choice is to simply have a lazy vacation and lie on the beach or take advantage of the marine environment which is rich in rare animal life. The waters off Sharjah are rich in dugongs, whales and dolphins, turtles and coral reefs. This abundance of marine life has lead to Sharjah becoming famous for its diving possibilities (there are also several wrecks in the area for divers to explore.) There are several businesses and organisations in Sharjah especially on the east coast that not only run and organise dive tours but that also teach visitors to dive.
Sharjah has a large selection of parks, national parks and gardens. The Desert park is home to a special breeding establishment that has been set up to breed endangered local species such as the Arabian Leopard, Caracal, Wolf, Cheetah, Ibex, Oryx, Gazelles and Wild Cats among other species. The Sharjah National park incorporates a cycle path and bicycles of all sizes are available for hire so that the entire family can experience all that the park has to offer. The parks throughout Sharjah are all family friendly with children's playgrounds and a large emphasis on family activities.
The deserts of Sharjah are a favourite location for four wheel drive enthusiasts especially in the winter months. It is possible to book both day tours and weekend four wheel drive tours through the hotels and other tourist locations. Visitors are also permitted to visit the area to drive themselves but everyone is requested to keep to the marked tracks to avoid unnecessary damage to the sensitive dune environment.

The Sports Personality Of The Year It is coming to the point in the year, when the nation starts to think about who deserves to be the sports personality of the year. In this article I am going to write about who I think will win this years award as well as about the other possible contenders. The year started with so much hype with events such as the Fifa world cup to look forward to. The performance of the English team was not exactly the best and it is unlikely that a footballer will win the award. I actually believed England had a realistic chance of winning the trophy and was not very happy at the way the team played or approached the games, it was far too negative. Our cricket team have not really continued how they left off after the .. [Click to continue]

Super Bowl Party Ideas for Both Football Fans and Those Who Just Like the Commercials Once baseball's World Series defined America's competitive nature but today the Super Bowl and football have taken center stage. Times change and although major league baseball players are not yet in bread lines they do seem dwarfed by the popularity of football. For many households the Super Bowl party is becoming one of the major social occasions. Admittedly plebian compared to the tradition of cotillion and such it is considered to be as much pure pleasure as New Year's Eve once was. Traditions change and its best to change with them or be as overpowered as a salmon swimming upstream to spawn. Today's Super Bowl Party has a decades-long track record of .. [Click to continue]
A Guide To Safe Car Hire Part Two In the previous part of this guide I introduced the idea that hiring a car on holiday is a great way to see more on holiday, however you need to be careful and this is where our guide continues with what to consider when driving in a foreign land. When on the road make sure you wear seatbelts at all times, as well as the kids in the back who are all hyped up because you're finally going to the water park! You're in a foreign country and as such will likely be a complete novice with regards to the local driving rules. In most cases you'll be driving on the opposite side of the road and so everything you know about driving is mirrored, this is the most common cause of accidents with car hiring holidaymakers. To be .. [Click to continue]
Cubalicity and Hypocrisy Nobody despises communism more than I, but the other day I wondered out loud why the U.S. does not consider opening normalized trade with the tiny island nation of Cuba. The fellow sitting next to me furrowed his brow as if I had said something obscene and hissed, "hey, in case you haven't noticed, Cuba is Communist." I responded that in case he hadn't noticed, "so is China and Vietnam" (with both of whom we are now positioning ourselves for permanent normal trade relations). I also added that since we were in the process of opening up relations with our new "friend" in the Mideast, Libya, perhaps it was time we consider the matter of Cuba. Indeed, as Fidel Castro begins his journey into the archives, his brother, Raul recently .. [Click to continue]
